Knox to host Bioneers conference

Knox College will host the second annual Prairie Fire Bioneers Conference Oct. 26-28. Affiliated with the National Bioneers Conference held in San Rafael, Calif., Knox’s conference is one of 24 satellite conferences across the country…

The conference will feature renowned speaker Julia Butterfly Hill delivering a keynote address on the Knox campus, as well as numerous plenary speakers via satellite. Hill is an American activist and environmentalist best known for living in a 180-foot-tall, roughly 1,500-year-old California Redwood tree for 738 days from 1997 to 1999. Local workshops will be hosted by regional leaders such as representatives from Illinois Citizens for Clean Air and Water (ICCAW), the University of Illinois Extension Office, and the Sustainable Business Center… Read more…

Knox participates in art fest

There’s a bit of madness at Blick Art Materials twice a year. The fall version of Blick Madness is 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Thursday at [the Blick retail outlet in Galesburg] and all Blick Art Materials stores. Everything from discounts to a band, to a college art contest will be featured at the local store… The Moon Dog Trio will provide live music from 6-8 p.m. during the college painting competition… Monmouth College, Knox College, Carl Sandburg College, Bradley University and Western Illinois University have committed to take part in the painting competition… Carl Sandburg College won the first two events, followed by Southeast Community College of Burlington, Iowa, and Monmouth… Read more…

Knox students involved in local production

The Gilbert and Sullivan musical extravaganza and comic operetta, “The Pirates of Penzance,” will be performed by Prairie Players Civic Theater at the Orpheum Theatre Friday through Sunday… “We have some wonderfully talented Knox students who are applying their education by designing the costumes, serving as stage manager, actors, and sound design. It is a wonderful mix of college and community coming together,” [director Kurt Killam] said. “Altogether there are 15 current [students] or recent graduates of Knox College directly involved in the production — on stage or behind the scenes.”… Read more…

College hosts Relay for Life

The American Cancer Society will be holding its Relay for Life of Knox County this week from 6:30 p.m. Friday [July 13] to 8 a.m. Saturday [July 14] at Knox College. The relay, an overnight event designed to help raise money to fund cancer research and patients while spreading cancer awareness, already has 427 participants comprising 42 teams… Read more…

College is stop for Railroad Days tour

For someone passing by, it may have been rather difficult to tell where the carnival ended and the street fair began at the 35th annual Railroad Days celebration Saturday.

[Events included] a tram tour, put on by the Galesburg Historical Society… [At Old Main, the] tour showcased impersonators of historic Galesburg residents, both past and present. Among this group was Hiram Kellogg, the first president of Knox College [portrayed by Bill Butts of Galesburg, and the current Knox President] Dr. Teresa Amott, first female president of Knox College. Also seen on the tour was William Patch, first CB&Q conductor in Galesburg… On the Hope Cemetery Tour, riders were able to see some of the most influential of Galesburg’s historic residents… The Galesburg Historical Society decided to focus the tram tours on the various “firsts” of Galesburg, in celebration of the city’s 175th anniversary. Knox to host community meeting

The city’s Community Relations Commission received a report from organizers of the local NAACP chapter on the efforts of that group to address education, racial profiling and other related diversity concerns in the community Tuesday night at City Hall…As a result, they have organized the Youth Educational Experience from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday in Knox College’s Ford Center for the Fine Arts.

“It will be a motivational awareness workshop designed to inform young people on a variety of ways to prepare for college,” said chapter President Candy Webb. “It’s free and lunch is included. Students and parents, caregivers and mentors will be given information and resources to prepare students for college.”… Read more…
