Kiara Booth had an official reason to be outside the Knox County Courthouse for Friday’s “Hands Around the Courthouse.” The just-turned 21-year-old Knox College student has been an intern at Safe Harbor Family Crisis Center for the last two terms. And she plans to continue volunteering this summer. But the real reason Booth went to the annual event held to mark April as National Child Abuse Prevention Month was shared by the close to 100 people who joined her.
“I’ve learned a lot about myself,” Booth said. “And I’ve learned about different people’s perspectives. It’s been time-consuming and I’ve been asked questions I’ve never heard before. But I’ve learned I have a gift for helping others.”… Read more…

1969 Galesburg High School graduate Ken Johnson has been named to lead communications and marketing for the Solar Energy Industries Association… “This is an exciting opportunity to be part of something which is so critically important to America’s future,” said Johnson, a 1973 Knox College graduate… A Capitol Hill veteran, Johnson previously headed up communications for the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) and two major committees in the U.S. House of Representatives…

More than 15 vendors took part in Friday’s first West Central Illinois Sustainability Expo… at the Sustainable Business Center… Companies and organizations represented included Cross-Fire Soil Remediation, Blackburn Sampling, Illinois Institute for Rural Affairs, Ameren Illinois, Carl Sandburg College, U of I Extension, Sitka Salmon Shares, KnoxCorps, Growing Together, Pennycress Energy, Intellihot and others. Genevieve Crow of Sitka Salmon Shares said the company that works with independent fishermen in Sitka, Alaska, to bring fresh salmon and other fish to the Midwest is gearing up for the season… The company was formed at Knox College by Nic Mink and a couple of his students… Read more…

Sarah Jones hopes you’ll “dig” her new vintage/modern store. Dig, 70 N. Seminary St., is scheduled to open Wednesday… “It will be vintage clothing and household goods and recycled furniture,” she said, lots of furniture… Jones, 37, grew up in Galesburg and graduated from Knox College, where she was an art major…
