A senior member of the Knox College football team has been recognized by the Midwest Conference for a record-setting performance against Eureka College. Mike Schroeder, a running back and kick/punt returner, was named on the MWC Special Teams Performer of the Week. There are no bowl games for the Division III colleges but a couple of Illinois schools have created one for themselves based on their ties to Abe Lincoln. Eureka College and Knox College will play the Abraham Lincoln Bowl starting this season and every year through at least 2015.

Peoria native and former Knox College men’s basketball player and assistant coach Kevin Walden is returning to his alma mater to lead the men’s basketball program. Walden becomes just the fourth men’s basketball coach at Knox since 1960. He follows Harley Knosher, Tim Heimann and Rob Purlee, who in July resigned after four seasons to take a position on the staff at Otterbein University.

Two men with strong golfing backgrounds will lead the Prairie Fire golf teams this fall. Knox athletic director Chad Eisele announced the hiring of Rielly Parungao and A.J. Shule as interim head coaches. Parungao will coach the women’s golf team while Shule will guide the men’s squad. Shule is a 2012 Knox College graduate. He was a four-year member of the men’s golf team, including the 2008 Midwest Conference championship squad. Parungao is a 2010 Monmouth College graduate who played golf for the Fighting Scots and has worked as the assistant golf professional at Soangetaha Country Club in Galesburg since March… Read more…

James Clark was the head baseball coach at Spoon River College for the 2010 and 2011 seasons and recently stepped down as the head baseball coach at Eureka College… to continue his pursuit of a Master’s Degree in sports management at Western Illinois University. Clark, who played baseball for Post 727 and the Tigers before he continued his playing career at Knox College, said it was only natural he became a head baseball coach.
Clark, a 2009 Knox graduate who played mainly first base and designated hitter, said he settled on the idea of being a head baseball coach when he was a member of the Jami Isaacson-led Prairie Fire. “I wanted to do something in athletics and throughout college I decided to coach,” he said. “Coach Isaacson let me pick his brain about the game and told me how to go about getting a job…” Read more…
