The Register-Mail looks at how science teachers teach global warming with balance.
Peter Schwartzman, chairman of environmental studies at Knox College, teaches climate change in an introductory environmental studies class that is filled with non-science majors.
“We focus a lot on the uncertainty of the science associated with the issue,” he said. “Students have to have a sense that there is more than one opinion on this.”
In a recent class, the 35 students discussed two articles they had been assigned to read - one saying global warming was real and one describing it as hooey. A general consensus from the wide-ranging discussion seemed to be a desire for more clear evidence to support both arguments rather than just partisan rhetoric.
