Alumni Hall to receive preservation funding

Filed under: General — Karrie @ 2:11 pm

Excerpt from the Register-Mail:

Knox College was approved to receive, during the 2008 fiscal year, $295,320 for “preservation projects through the Save America’s Treasures program,” according to the Chronicle’s searchable database. The project, originally applied for on the FY 2007 Appropriations bill, was sponsored by Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill.

Since Congress did not pass a full appropriations bill for FY 2007, many projects such as the one at Knox were pushed back for one more year.

According to Durbin’s press secretary, Christina Mulka, the money will be used to establish the Knox College Lincoln Studies Center; the Lincoln-Douglas Debates/Underground Railroad Information and Education Center; an art gallery and exhibition space; and “historically-appropriate building renovation for academic/public use” through non-federal funding. All these projects are set to take place in Alumni Hall, which has been undergoing renovations for the past seven years.

Choir sings in Spain to record crowds

Filed under: General — Karrie @ 2:21 pm

Excerpt from the Register-Mail:

While many of their fellow students were hanging out at home or taking week-long road trips during spring break, 59 Knox College Choir members immersed themselves in the language, culture and sights of Spain.

For the third time in five years, the choir trekked overseas to spend several days giving concerts and touring a place most had never seen. Previous Spanish tours were conducted in 2003 and 2006…..

…..“We had some extraordinary performance opportunities this time,” said Laura Lane, professor of music and director of choral activities at Knox. “I knew that the reason for touring with a college choir is to bond them closer to each other … to get them to have a unique and wonderful experience that will help the music.”

Students recreate history

Filed under: Students, College News — Karrie @ 8:33 pm

Knox history students set the scene as part of their final exam in history class, recreating the 1858 Lincoln-Douglas Debate.

Excerpt from the Register Mail:

Louisa Abbot walked a short distance to Knox College’s Old Main to see Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas debate in 1858, and she was one of the lucky ones.

“Louisa Abbot,” a composite character played by Knox College junior Sara Patterson of Geneseo, would have been a student at Knox Academy when the two state politicians rolled into town as part of their campaigns for state senate…..

The debate site was re-created Tuesday morning in the Ford Center for the Fine Arts by 15 Knox history students as a final project for assistant professor of history Catherine Denial’s “Museums, Monuments and Memory” course, an upper-division history class designed to give students a more hands-on taste of chronicling the past. “A lot of history majors go into careers in museums or archives management,” Denial said. “I wanted to have something where they could experience that in college.”

So, she proposed a final project which would give her students the chance to research and design an exhibit about the historic debates, putting them in charge of all aspects of the design and logistical planning.
