Group presents ‘A Nova Christmas’

he Nova Singers will perform its most popular concert of the year, the annual Christmas concert, at 7:30 p.m. Friday at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Davenport, Iowa, and 7:30 p.m. Saturday at First Lutheran Church in Galesburg.

Titled “A Nova Christmas,” the concert will feature a variety of Christmas tunes from traditional carols to more contemporary pieces. The choir will also perform new takes on old classics, like “The First Noel” and “We Three Kings” by jazz guru Darmon Meader.

The concert also will play host to the world premiere of a works by Galesburg composer Daniel Godsil, “Choral Meditation on Lo, How a Rose.”

“We are so fortunate to have talent like Daniel’s right here in Galesburg,” said Laura Lane, Nova Singers artistic director and director of choirs at Knox College. “I honestly think this will be the best Christmas program we’ve ever given.”

Nova Singers will be joined by youth choirs for both of their Christmas performances. In Davenport, the guest choir is the Sudlow Select Choir, under the direction of Diane Carius. In Galesburg, Nova will be joined by the Carl Sandburg Children’s Choir, directed by Jessica Stiller.

AARP DC Senior State Director Named

Louis C. Davis, Jr., has been named AARP DC Senior State Director.  In that position, he will lead a state team in establishing AARP as the champion for people 50+ in the District of Columbia. Davis formerly served as the AARP District of Columbia’s Legislative Affairs and Advocacy Director….

Davis holds a BA in political science from Knox College and a Master of Public Administration from The George Washington University Trachtenberg School of Public Policy and Public Administration.

Knox professor honored by engineering group

Knox College professor of computer science John Dooley has been honored by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers with selection as a senior member. The recognition by the largest technical professional association in the world, acknowledges both Dooley’s professional accomplishments and length of service in the field.

Dooley has taught at Knox since 2001. His teaching and research interests focus on software engineering and cryptology. This year he has published two research papers about the writing of cryptologist Herbert Yardley. He also regularly reviews works of fiction that use codes and cryptology.

Vaca Knox College’s Performer of the Week

Edel Vaca, a junior from Chicago has been named the Knox College Prairie Fire Performer of the Week. The junior 133-pound wrestler won the “outstanding wrestler” award, after going 4-0 to win his weight class at the MSOE Invite last weekend.

Vaca was seeded fifth in the 25-man 133 bracket.

Vaca’s record is 8-3.

It was the first time a Knox wrestler has been awarded the “outstanding wrestler” award at a tournament.

Knox women swimmers 3rd at Augie Invite

The Knox College women’s swim swim team took third in the 10-team Augustana Invitational last weekend.

The Prairie Fire were led by sophomore Bess Cooley, who finished the two-day meet with four individual first place finishes — the 100-yard breaststroke (1:09.29), 200-yard breaststroke (2:29.87), 200 individual medley (2:18.07) and 400-yard individual medley (4:55.90).

She broke two of her own school records in the 100-yard breaststroke by more than a second (old record 1:10.98) and the 200-yard breaststroke by almost five seconds (old record 2:34.25).

Cooley, along with Tory Kassabaum and Rachel Clark, contributed on five relay teams that gave the Prairie Fire one first place, one second place and three third place finishes.

The 400 freestyle relay team of Cooley, Laura Blue, Kassabaum and Clark took first place set a school record with their time of 3:56.33.

Galesburg library calls for teens

The Galesburg Public Library has plans for teens in January….

The Galesburg Public Library is conducting a Creative Writing Workshop from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Jan. 12. Creative writing majors from Knox College will show students how to express themselves in prose and poetry using writing exercises.
