A gem of empires, Dhiban surrounded by questions

Filed under: Students, Faculty Experts — Kristin @ 1:11 pm

 From the Jordan Times
On the King’s Highway, between the mosaic city of Madaba and the dramatic gorge of Wadi Mujib, stand the remnants of a town that defied the odds.

Some 70 kilometres south of Amman, Tel Dhiban was a center of commerce and culture throughout the ages.

What sets Dhiban apart from other cities of antiquity in Jordan is its inhospitable location: There are no major water sources above ground or underground near the area, which receives little rain.

Despite its arid surroundings, the area of Dhiban has been a prized conquest of empires and the capital of various kingdoms for over four millennia.

The history of Dhiban dates back to the Early Bronze Age, in 3100BC, when the first settlers built mud-brick houses on the hill….

Teams from Knox College, the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of Liverpool among others have been working at Dhiban over the past few years to learn more about the city and its role through the ages…

Snaking and shaking at Knox: It’s Pumphandle!

Filed under: Students, College News, Events — Karrie @ 11:34 am

From the Register-Mail:

The students, faculty and staff of Knox College have been shaking one another’s hands in the annual Pumphandle event for about a century — give or take a decade.

Some say it began in the 1920s, others say the late 1800s. The origins of the tradition are unclear to many, but everyone knows why people turn out in droves the day before classes start to shake hands with hundreds.

“We’ve been doing it for over 100 years,” said senior Rachel Perez at this year’s Pumphandle on Thursday. “It’s where everybody gets together, and it’s a show of solidarity.”

President Roger Taylor starts the line and students, faculty and staff shake his hand in a line, then shake the hands of those who have gone before them in the line. Soon the line snakes around the campus quad, sometimes moving quickly, sometimes slowing to a standstill, until each and every person has greeted one another.

Taylor’s been Pumphandling since he was a student.

“It’s a big deal because it’s uniquely Knox,” he said between handshakes and friendly greetings as the line slowly spirals around him. “Who else does this? It’s a symbol of Knox as a community. And it shows the creativity of the students as it winds.”

Former Cabinet Official and Governor Visits Knox College

Filed under: Speakers, Events — Karrie @ 11:09 am

From WGIL radio:

The academic year is officially underway at Knox College.

President Roger Taylor kicked things off during the convocation Friday morning in front of a packed auditorium of students.

The convocation address was given this year by former Secretary of Health and Human Services and four term Wisconsin Governor Tommy Thompson.

Thompson gave advice to the students about reaching for their dreams, and letting nothing get in the way of achieving them.

“While you’re doing this life’s journey you’re going to stumble, because you’re human,” Thompson said. “Every single one of you are going to make mistakes. But that doesn’t mean you can’t pick yourself up, and build upon that mistake and be a better person tomorrow, than you were today.”

Thompson also shared his experiences as governor of Wisconsin and how he responded to the 9/11 attacks.

Knox Volleyball Star Gets Conference Honor

Filed under: Students, Athletics — Karrie @ 11:36 am

From WGIL radio:

A great all-around volleyball player for Knox College who has picked up where she left off last season already has an award for her efforts.

Junior Kelly Ricketts (Galesburg, Illinois/Galesburg) was a First-Team All-Midwest Conference selection last season. The outside hitter and co-captain for the Prairie Fire led the MWC in kills and kills per game in 2009 and was 13th in NCAA Division III.

Ricketts, who has helped Knox get off to a 3-3 start this season, including three straight victories and ultimately a 3-1 mark in last weekend’s Eureka College Tournament, has been named the Midwest Conference’s Volleyball Performer of the Week.

Ricketts had 81 kills, or an average of 16.2 per match, and a .278 hitting percentage through Knox College’s first five matches. She displayed her durability by playing every point of every set of every match at Eureka and her all-around skills by contributing 45 digs, or an average of nine per match.
