Only five years out of his doctoral program, Stephen Schroth’s scholarship and seemingly boundless energy have already made a mark on Knox College, a nationally ranked private liberal arts college in Galesburg, Illinois, where he is an assistant professor in the Educational Studies Department.
In the past four years his research publications with Knox colleague Jason Helfer on gifted education topics have won three awards for excellence in research from the MENSA Education & Research Foundation. Last fall Knox College presented Schroth with an award for distinguished teaching.
Schroth spoke with the Curry Alumni Scholar [website] about his experiences here and their influence on his early career at Knox College… “Curry has had a tremendous effect on my career. My long-term goal was to teach at a liberal arts college in the Midwest… So when I arrived at Knox in 2006, I felt like I was home… Knox is celebrating its 175th anniversary this year, and was founded by abolitionists from the Oneida Colony in New York who also founded Galesburg. A week ago, Knox College men’s basketball coach Rob Purlee led his team into Glennie Gymnasium [at nearby rival Monmouth College] for a big win over the Fighting Scots. The 2004 graduate of Monmouth College took time to reflect on what it means to go back to his alma-matre not only as a coach, but as a proud alumnus. [Purlee’s parents and wife are Monmouth graduates, and] Purlee was a senior captain in basketball. [In football] he was on top of every category attainable from the quarterback position.
[After graduating, he served as an assistant coach at Monmouth.] Then in 2006, Purlee landed the head coaching job [in basketball at Knox,] the school he had played against so many times. The acquisition hasn’t seemed to sour anyone’s opinion of him back at Monmouth, though. “Every time I go back, my reception is great,” said Purlee. “I get treated very well there.” Read more…

Wabash College President Patrick E. White and Dean of the College Gary A. Phillips have announced the promotion of four assistant professors [including] psychology professor Neil Schmitzer-Torbert [who] have been granted tenure with the rank of associate professor at the college. “These four members of the faculty more than surpass the expectations of excellence expected of each and every Wabash teacher,” Phillips said…
Schmitzer-Torbert graduated summa cum laude with honors in psychology from Knox College before earning his Ph.D. in neuroscience from the University of Minnesota… “His ability to engage students in cutting edge neuroscience research has garnered high praise and respect from the wider science community,” Phillips said… A National Institutes of Health grant has enabled Schmitzer-Torbert to conduct research with students on the effects of cocaine on the behaviors of rats… Read more…

Mayor Sal Garza, after noticing a complete absence of public places named after local women, is forming a committee tasked with identifying and researching Galesburg women who could possibly have their names enshrined forever on future city projects, including buildings, parks, streets and bridges…
The group will first meet in late January, with Knox College President Teresa Amott and Carl Sandburg College President Lori Sundberg co-chairing the committee. The two presidents are the first women to lead those schools… Read more…
