Alum is hospital chaplain

Mary Potter, a volunteer chaplain at Adventist Hinsdale Hospital, has contributed more than 1,700 hours of service over the past 15 years. She recently was recognized as the hospital’s volunteer of the month.

“We can’t cure people, but I believe there is healing through prayer,” Potter said. “Even though I’m not ordained or a professional chaplain, I believe in the power of prayer and I wanted to bring what gifts I could to help those who are ill.”…

Potter began volunteering at her children’s school when they were growing up. A native of La Grange, Potter earned a degree in liberal arts at Knox College in Galesburg… Read more…

Knox alum gives insight into Chicago politics

Students on the ACM Chicago Program, who recently were treated to an insider’s view of the “State of the City” provided by Alderman Joe Moore and journalist Ben Joravsky – two seasoned veterans of the Chicago political scene who also share an ACM connection.

A member of the City Council since 1991, Moore represents Chicago’s 49th Ward, which takes in the racially and economically diverse Rogers Park neighborhood tucked along the lakefront in the city’s northeast corner. Both [Moore and Joravsky] went to high school in Evanston, and both went on to graduate from ACM colleges.

As a student at Knox College, Moore participated in the ACM Urban Studies Program, which is now part of the Chicago Program. He’s been generous in his support of ACM students through years, Scott-Boria said, and regularly meets with students and takes them to see the City Council chambers. Last semester, Moore gave Chicago Program students an entree to front row seats at a press conference that Mayor Rahm Emanuel held in Rogers Park… Read more…

Knox recognizes outstanding career achievements

The tradition of recognizing former students’ career successes continued Friday night [February 17, 2012] as Knox College honored five individuals with the Alumni Achievement Award. Norman Golar (Class of 02′) took home the Young Alumni Achievement Award. The 31-year-old, celebrated for his contributions in higher education and writing, tells WGIL Knox will always be a “watermark on his page… The connection that I have with Knox permeates all aspects of my life.”

Professor interviewed for documentary on happiness

[In the newly released documentary, “Happy,” director Roko Belic] interviews some of the world’s happiness gurus — Daniel Gilbert, Sonja Lyubomirsky, Tim Kasser, the Dalai Lama — and travels to India, Japan, Denmark, Bhutan, Africa and parts of America to find stories of contented people…

[The film was screened on] World Happy Day, Saturday, Feb. 11, in more than 600 locations in 60 countries and on seven continents, including Antarctica… The film is non-profit and was produced by the Creative Visions Foundation, which supports activists. All proceeds go to fund the “Happy movement.” The organization is in the process of developing an educational component… Read more…

For Courting Students, Glossy Viewbooks Lose Luster: Of all a college’s courtship materials, the viewbook has long been the centerpiece. It seeks to convey the whole ethos of a place, what makes it unique. But viewbooks tend to blend together. Their pages teem with descriptions of majors and extracurriculars, and photos of bell towers, front gates, and groups of happy, diverse students on sunny fall days…

Should colleges keep spending so much on what amounts to a coffee-table book? That’s what officials at Knox College, in Galesburg, Ill., are trying to figure out. For decades, the small liberal-arts college has used a viewbook, but now administrators aren’t sure that’s the best way to promote Knox. All options are on the table, says Teresa L. Amott, the new president. The college might go with a scaled-back viewbook, a nontraditional one, or none at all, she says. “We’re trying to find the most compelling way to introduce students to Knox.”

Already the college has de-emphasized the viewbook, says Paul R. Steenis, vice president for enrollment. The current one is only 30-some pages, down from as many as 80 in decades past. Knox sends it out to fewer prospective students, those who data show are most likely to be a good fit. In addition to the viewbook, Knox uses smaller, more-focused mailings to drive students and parents to interact with the college in a deeper way online… Read more…
