World reknowned artist and Galesburg native Dorothea Tanning died [January 31, 2012] at her home in Manhattan. Tanning was 101 when she died Tuesday. Considered a leading surrealist painter of the 1930s, Tanning led a whirlwind life in the international art world. She was married to surrealist painter and sculptor Max Ernst for 30 years… After she reached 80, Tanning again received attention as she concentrated on writing. She produced a novel, an autobiography and poems.

Tanning was born on Aug. 25, 1910, to middle-class parents in Galesburg, “a place where you sat on the davenport and waited to grow up,” as she put it in her autobiography, “Between Lives: An Artist and Her World” (2001). She lived at 420 Hawkinson Ave. during her childhood and attended Galesburg public schools.

Tanning attended Knox College with the Class of 1932. Tanning received accolades at a celebration of her life at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, New York last fall. Knox faculty member Robin Metz, director of the Knox Program in Creative Writing, participated in the Oct. 3, 2011, event… Knox awarded Tanning an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Humane Letters in 1988. The college’s Seymour Library houses a significant collection of Tanning’s work, including rare archival examples of her undergraduate art and writing. Read more…
