Faculty perform in schools

Students at Galesburg’s elementary, junior high and middle schools were treated Wednesday and today with jazz performances by veteran musicians. Daniel Leahy, local businessman and lifelong professional musician, was joined by David Hoffman, former trumpet player for the Ray Charles Orchestra… Kevin Hart, vibraphonist and instructor at Knox and Parkland colleges and Illinois State University, and leader of his own group, Vibe Tribe; and Andy Crawford, Knox graduate and current instructor at the school… Leahy said the program exposes students to jazz… Read more…

Jazz returns to Downtown Galesburg

The sweet sounds of jazz music will once again be heard in parts of downtown Galesburg the latter half of this week. This marks the 32nd year of the Knox-Rootabaga Jazz Festival, Thursday through Saturday of this week primarily at McGillacuddy’s on Cherry Street, with the final performance Saturday night at the Orpheum Theatre… In addition to a number of Knox College-based groups featuring alumni, faculty and others, featured performers will be “Ted Sirota’s Rebel Souls” Friday night, and The Noah Preminger Group Saturday night… Read more…

Knox alum is teacher of the year

Jenny Bredemeier was named Galesburg Teacher of the Year on Wednesday by the Galesburg Area Chamber of Commerce’s Education Task Force. Bredemeier teaches reading at Nielson Elementary School… The woman who grew up in Knoxville and is a Knox College graduate was nominated by Ashley Shane, who first became acquainted with Bredemeier when Shane was completing most of her practicum work in Bredemeier’s classroom…

In her 10th year of teaching, [Bredemeier works with the Reading Buddies program, and] said everyone from Knox College students to senior citizens reads to students. Bredemeier said Knox students spend seven weeks in the program… Read more…

Knox students interviewed at Santorum event

[Several Knox students and supporters of Rick Santorum] occupied opposite sides of Seminary Street during Monday evening’s wait for Republican presidential nomination hopeful Rick Santorum. Tommy Dastamanis came to support Santorum and sell campaign buttons. He carried a billboard filled with images of the presidential hopeful and worked the Chez Willy’s side of the brick street…

On the other side of the bricks, on the sidewalk in front of The Landmark and Kohl’s Diamond Gallery, a pair of 20-year-old Knox College students staked out a different kind of territory. Kate Haslem carried a sign that read “Men of Quality Respect Women’s Equality.” She found the slogan online. Sterling Kowalski’s placard was stark by comparison. It was a simple blue square emblazoned with a gold “Equals” sign… Haslem and Kowalski did see the Santorum quest for candidacy as something to fight against… Read more…

Professor comments on Illinois primary

Rick Santorum got what he wished for last week. After he finished first in the Alabama and Mississippi primaries, the campaign for the Republican U.S. presidential nomination became a two-man race between Santorum and front-runner Mitt Romney. Now the former senator from Pennsylvania is hoping for an upset in Tuesday’s primary in Illinois… Illinois Republicans on Tuesday will be voting in several races, including the presidential primary… A healthy turnout of voters is expected — and needed — in Tuesday’s contest.

At least 767,400 voters participated in Illinois’s Republican primary for governor in 2010, and Knox College political science professor Andrew Civettini told the Galesburg Register-Mail he expects a larger number will show up Tuesday. “The simple answer is, Yes, more people will vote because there is a presidential primary that’s contested.
