Coaching legend retires from Knox

Knox College’s associate baseball coach Jim “Jimmy” Isaacson is retiring at the end of the Prairie Fire’s season. Isaacson will be honored before and after Knox’s doubleheader Saturday [April 28] against Illinois College, which has been dubbed Jim Isaacson Day.

“I’ve given just about everything I could from a physical and mental standpoint,” Isaacson said. “I’ll miss the camaraderie with the kids more than anything.”…

“I hired [Isaacson] because it was an opportunity for us to add the best baseball coach in the area to our staff and it wasn’t something we wanted to pass up under any circumstances,” said [retired Knox athletic director Harley] Knosher. “Long before he came to Knox, Jim had established himself as one of the top baseball people in this part of the state. Students help NAACP focus on education

Residents, political and community leaders on Tuesday helped the revitalized local chapter of the NAACP celebrate its new start, as the group focuses on increasing opportunities for kids and diversity within the community. Nearly 50 residents attended the group’s open house at the Galesburg Community Center…

Knox College students Devin Compton, Jamall Nelson and Melvin Taylor filled out voter registration forms at the open house. “We are happy to be in Galesburg and a reactivated branch,” said Candy Webb, the local chapter’s interim president…

Although in the early stages, the group already has plans to host an election forum for state and federal candidates in the summer. The group also plans to engage the youth, with job fairs and events… Read more…

Knox grad honored by Carl Sandburg College

Susan Swartwout was honored at Carl Sandburg College’s Alumni Awards Reception on Thursday, April 12. Swartwout, who graduated from the college in 1987, received the Distinguished Alumnus Award.

Since leaving [Carl Sandburg College] with an associate degree in art, Swartwout earned a bachelor’s degree in literature from Knox College and her doctorate from Illinois State University. She began Big Muddy, a journal of the Mississippi River Valley, and has published short stories, essays and poems, and aided in the completion of several books… Read more…

Faculty to discuss Sandburg, Chicago

Knox College Professor Robin Metz will participate in a panel discussion “Stormy, Brawling, Husky Chicago: Sandburg’s Literary Influences in the City of the Big” at 10am Saturday, April 21, at the Sandburg Historic Site Barn, 313 E. Third St., Galesburg, as part of the Sandburg Days Festival… Chicago Literary Hall of Fame Executive Director Donald G. Evans will lead the discussion about the profound impact Carl Sandburg made on Chicago’s literary landscape…

Metz received the Rainer Maria Rilke International Poetry Prize for his book “Unbidden Angel,” as well as more than 16 additional international awards… Read more…

Faculty featured in TV report on gossip

CHICAGO (CBS) — It’s a familiar problem: gossiping. How much is too much when it comes to talking about coworkers behind their backs? CBS 2’s Susan Carlson reports, gossip definitely created tension at Empower Public Relations in Chicago, which decided to create a “no gossip zone.” That meant no more negative comments about anyone behind their back. Now, if you have a beef with a coworker you have to say it their face…

CEO Sam Chapman says it also boosted productivity and company profits. But not everyone’s buying it. “Asking people to stop gossiping is like asking people to stop breathing,” said Frank McAndrew, a psychology professor at Knox College. McAndrew has been studying the effects of gossip for years. He admits some gossip can be harmful, but says it has more benefits than downsides… Read more…

Alum is choral director

Ten years ago, Susan Shoemaker and her late husband, John, decided Macomb (Illinois) should be the place where one can hear major choral works performed. “That night we drove back from Iowa City in the early months of 2002 after hearing an inspiring concert of a major work,” said Shoemaker, director of the McDonough Choral Society, “and the subject came up of how we never had heard any major choral works in our wonderful city of Macomb.”

The McDonough Choral Society will hold its 10th anniversary concert at 7:30 p.m. Monday at Wesley United Methodist Church… Shoemaker herself has spent many years learning and teaching choral music. After receiving music degrees from Knox College and Northwestern University, she taught music for 18 years in public schools.
