Faculty: Seeking money hurts happiness

Americans have been on a decades-long march toward greater material rewards, social and professional status, and physical appearance. And there are signs that we have become much less happy as a result….

“When people really focus on those extrinsic values, they end up having a worse psychological satisfaction of their needs, and they are less happy as a result,” says Tim Kasser, professor of psychology at Knox College, Galesburg, Ill.

In studies throughout the world of people in all income groups and demographics, he says, “it’s a fairly robust finding in that it seems to turn up over and over again.”… The pursuit of money and materialism play a central role, especially in America. Knox honored with national award

Alyssa Gill hopes to encourage high school students to follow their dreams in college. She spends hours each week meeting with clubs at Knox College to plan how they can make the process [of volunteering in the community] easier…

Gill was just one of the many Knox College students who has clocked several hours of community service while in school. In late March, the institution was awarded the 2012 President’s Higher Education Community Service award for totaling more than 16,000 hours of volunteer work last academic year. This is the third time that the school has won the award in the last four years…

“Community service is something that is important and interesting to our students, so we encourage that. It’s also part of the educational program that we offer here,” Heartlein said. “It’s an opportunity to get into the community to provide services and to understand how a community works.”… Read more…
