Knox supports summer entertainment

Memorial Day is seen as the unofficial start of summer, but it’s really summer in downtown Galesburg when a new season of Cafe in the Park kicks off… Megan Funk, a Knox College student and intern [for Galesburg Business Association] is designing yard signs with the farmers’ market on one side and Cafe in the Park on the other.

Bill Morris, vice president of the Galesburg Business Association, said Knox College has been very involved in the farmers’ market and has brought some new energy to that event. Music is planned for the farmers’ market this year. “We love the energy Knox College has brought to it,” he said of the farmers’ market. “Sustainable agriculture is coming. We’ve got some champions of it around here.”… Read more…

Knox joins delegation to meet with Congressman

Building what one local lawmaker calls “the backbone of America” was the subject of a small business roundtable Thursday, May 24. 17th District Congressman Bobby Schilling sat with area small business owners inside the Galesburg Commerce Center. Representation from both Knox and Carl Sandburg College was also present

Schilling tells WGIL Thursday’s discussion featured support for what Galesburg’s done to sustain economic growth. Read more…

Knox promotes Farmers Market growth

With a variety of stands selling products ranging from produce to T-shirts and even steaks, the fourth farmers’ market of the season [on Simmons Street between Kellogg and Seminary in Galesburg] drew in a large crowd on a warm Saturday morning…

The farmers’ market has provided the perfect outlet for several Knox College students to become involved in the Galesburg community and gain valuable understanding of the benefits of supporting the local economy. Many students from Knox’s Sustainable Food Systems class have established a project known as “Growing Galesburg.” The students are focusing on strengthening the connections between the people of Galesburg, and they believe food is one of the best ways to do that… Read more…

Alum is Memorial Day Parade Marshal

The Veterans Memorial Day Association of Park Ridge has named the Grand Marshal of the 2012 Memorial Day Parade. World War II Veteran Richard F. Smaus of Park Ridge will serve at the post for the parade planned for a 10 a.m. start on Monday, May 28.

Smaus was raised in Downers Grove and earned his bachelor’s degree at Knox College. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in early 1943 and flew 38 combat and reconnaissance missions as a B-25 pilot over Indonesia and Borneo during World War II… He has worked with the Boy Scouts for more than forty years… fundraiser for the Girl Scouts, moderator in Christian Education for Youth, on the School Board Caucus, Elder in his Presbyterian church, and a commissioner to the Chicago Presbytery. He recently received the Celtic Cross for his dedication to youth, the first time the award was given by the Park Ridge Presbyterian Church… Read more…

Professor comments for Bulgarian media

The geography of parades actually tells a lot about the world today, from a demilitarized Europe that feels disgust of war, to North America, where [there are many] parades [in communities both large and small], to Asia, where… countries [are trying to become more prominent] on the world map and therefore draw more and more people and weapons [into their parades]….

“In Turkey, military parades and nationwide celebrations have been part of the nation-building process after WW I, just like in many other European countries,” says Professor Emre Sencer, military historian and professor at Knox College. “But I think it’s no longer necessary to have tanks on the boulevards for the celebration of national holidays.”… Read more (in Bulgarian)…

Knox helps clean up town

The head of the Galesburg Downtown Council says Knox College has been a huge help in cleaning up downtown Galesburg. Council president John Schlaf says student Josh Tatro, as part of an internship with the Midwest Center for Educational Initiatives, ended up documenting four-hundred different incidents of graffiti in the downtown area, which he then placed on an interactive map…

“We had talked about it in one of our recent meetings and so we got together with Josh and put together a group of volunteers– that included members from that team, Knox, Galesburg Community Foundation, Chamber of Commerce, Downtown Council– and started to go after the graffiti.”… Read more…
