The Digital History Project this month republishes an article first printed in 1895 by a French visitor to Knox, Madame Therese Bentzon: “We have yet to become acquainted with co-educational colleges… Perhaps the story of a week or two spent at [Knox] college of Galesburg, will give my readers the best idea of what co-education, in its most interesting phases, may be…

“I was present at a Latin class conducted by a young woman with an expressive and resolute face, who seemed to exercise great power over her pupils. There were grouped about her almost as many boys as girls. Although no rule requires it, the two sexes are separate, and occupy different sides of the room. In general the girls are more advanced in their knowledge… Many other colleges are founded upon the same basis as Knox, and this proves an uprightness of soul, fresh and robust virtues, to which it has seemed to me that the more Europeanized America of the East does not give sufficient justice…” Read more…

Hendrick named preseason All-American

Beyond Sports Network named Knox College senior linebacker Mike Hendrick as a 2012 Division III preseason First Team All-American… Hendrick was awarded an NCAA statistical champion plaque in May and set three Knox College records for tackles in 2011… Read more…

Knox and railroads go way back…

Tom Wilson writes in his “Tracking History” column: [Galesburg] residents staged their first Railroad Days celebration on Dec. 7, 1854, when a small coal and wood burning rail engine christened the “Reindeer” pulled into Galesburg… The chilly winter day at “five points” on South Kellogg Street near the Knox College campus marked the completion of 79 miles of track between Galesburg and Mendota…

Future President [Abraham] Lincoln made his first appearance in Galesburg on Aug. 24, 1858, while switching train connections at Five Points. When Lincoln’s connecting train was running a bit late he chose to walk through the downtown area and receive a hair clipping at a local barber shop… Both Lincoln and Stephen Douglas [arrived] in Galesburg via the rails for the famed debate on the Knox College campus in [October] 1858… Read more…

College is stop for Railroad Days tour

For someone passing by, it may have been rather difficult to tell where the carnival ended and the street fair began at the 35th annual Railroad Days celebration Saturday.

[Events included] a tram tour, put on by the Galesburg Historical Society… [At Old Main, the] tour showcased impersonators of historic Galesburg residents, both past and present. Among this group was Hiram Kellogg, the first president of Knox College [portrayed by Bill Butts of Galesburg, and the current Knox President] Dr. Teresa Amott, first female president of Knox College. Also seen on the tour was William Patch, first CB&Q conductor in Galesburg… On the Hope Cemetery Tour, riders were able to see some of the most influential of Galesburg’s historic residents… The Galesburg Historical Society decided to focus the tram tours on the various “firsts” of Galesburg, in celebration of the city’s 175th anniversary. Knox baseball adds nine recruits

The Knox College baseball team has received commitments from nine student-athletes, including two from Illinois high schools that played in state championship games this past season. Coach Jami Isaacson’s 2012 Knox College baseball team qualified for the Midwest Conference Tournament for the first time in four years after finishing second in the league’s South Division with a 7-5 record… Read more…

Knox athletes named academic all-conference

The Midwest Conference announced its Academic All-Conference honorees for the spring 2012 season, which included 46 athletes from Knox College. To receive the honor, students must meet a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.33 and is calculated only in the awarded academic season and not cumulative GPA… Read more…
