Faculty member encourages better fishing

The salmon caught by the small-boat family fishermen working with Galesburg-based Sitka Salmon Shares don’t have “handle with care” stamped on their sides, but to the men and women fishing for coho, sockeye and king salmon off the coast of southeast Alaska, the words might as well be there. Marsh Skeele is a second-generation fisherman. The 27-year-old bought his own boat a couple of years ago. He also does some work on his father’s boat. “My dad is a fisherman, so I’ve grown up fishing with him,” Skeele, who is based in Sitka, Alaska, said.

Sitka Salmon Shares co-founder and chief salmon steward Nic Mink, also a professor at Knox College, said the quality of the fish provided to the people of this area — and all of west-central Illinois — as well as Minneapolis, Chicagoland and Madison, Wis., comes back to the pride of the people who fish for the salmon… Read more…

College for Kids draws 260 youngsters

Students and teachers felt they had learned a great deal as Knox College for Kids adjourned its first of two weeks of classes Friday… “It helps the kids because they get the opportunity to pick their own classes,” Helfer said. “They get exposure to what college is like and what they can look forward to in their own future.”

“Our success is due to the teachers,” Schroth said. “The [Knox College students who work as] REACH Fellows are an important element. They teach their own classes, make sure the kids arrive and depart safely, and get prepared for teaching out in the community.”

“We have young people that study at Knox who love Galesburg, and they want to teach here,” said Helfer. “They love to give back to the community.”… Read more…

Knox grad wins teaching honor

Glen Rock High School (GRHS) theater teacher Kevern Cameron and Middle School special education teacher Dennis King are the winners of the district’s 43rd annual Robert H. Ax Awards… [The Glen Rock, New Jersey,] Home and School Association (HSA) established the award in 1969, to honor founding GRHS Principal Robert H. Ax upon his retirement.

Born and raised in the Midwest, Cameron graduated from Knox College in Illinois. Following graduate work at the University of Hawaii, he pursued a career in theater, working as an actor, director, stage manager, lighting designer and set designer, and also established a career in electronic media… Cameron joined the GRHS faculty in 2002, after 20 years as a videotape editor for WABC TV’s News and Creative Services department in New York… Read more…

Knox to host community meeting

The city’s Community Relations Commission received a report from organizers of the local NAACP chapter on the efforts of that group to address education, racial profiling and other related diversity concerns in the community Tuesday night at City Hall…As a result, they have organized the Youth Educational Experience from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday in Knox College’s Ford Center for the Fine Arts.

“It will be a motivational awareness workshop designed to inform young people on a variety of ways to prepare for college,” said chapter President Candy Webb. “It’s free and lunch is included. Students and parents, caregivers and mentors will be given information and resources to prepare students for college.”… Read more…

Dan Cray Group at Knox Jazz Night

Knox College’s weekly Jazz Night at McGillacuddy’s Restaurant, 58 S. Cherry St., will feature a free, public concert by the Dan Cray Group on June 14. Cray and his combo will perform 10 p.m. to midnight. Led by Cray on piano, the group includes Noah Preminger, tenor saxophone, who was the guest artist at this year’s Rootabaga Jazz Festival; Clark Sommers, bass; and Matt Carroll, drums… Opening for the Dan Cray Group will be the Knox Faculty Jazz Combo, performing 8 to 10 p.m… Read more…

Eisha named All-Conference

Gardner-South Wilmington graduate Amber Eisha has earned All-Midwest Conference accolades for the second straight season with Knox College. Playing as a pitcher and third baseman for the school in Galesburg Eisha was named one of 12 players to the Midwest Conference South Division First Team softball players.

With the Prairie Fire, Eisha pitched in 22 games, finishing with six of the nine wins by the team on the season. She also recorded a save to have a hand in nearly each victory by the team. “It means a lot to me and makes me realize that the coach trusts me,” Eisha said about factoring in most of Knox’s wins. “It makes me feel a lot better and makes me want to work harder.”… Read more…
