Knox graduate started Galesburg’s community theatre

Galesburg’s elite theatrical group known as the “Prairie Players” was launched by Knox College student Allen Crafton nearly a century ago… When taking a play writing course [in graduate school at Harvard University’s] Radcliffe College in Cambridge, Mass., Crafton often referred to his former college in Galesburg and the need for a theatrical playhouse.

[After completing his master’s degree at Harvard in 1915] Crafton, [and two classmates from graduate school] came to Galesburg and with a lot of ambition and a few hundred dollars established the forerunner of today’s Prairie Players… Read more…

Eureka, Knox to play in Abe Lincoln Bowl

There are no bowl games for the Division III colleges but a couple of Illinois schools have created one for themselves based on their ties to Abe Lincoln. Eureka College and Knox College will play the Abraham Lincoln Bowl starting this season and every year through at least 2015.

The first game will be Sept. 1 at Knox in Galesburg. The teams will compete for a bronze bust of a young Lincoln donated by former Ill. Gov. Jim Edgar… Read more…

Walden named Knox men’s basketball coach

Peoria native and former Knox College men’s basketball player and assistant coach Kevin Walden is returning to his alma mater to lead the men’s basketball program. Walden becomes just the fourth men’s basketball coach at Knox since 1960. He follows Harley Knosher, Tim Heimann and Rob Purlee, who in July resigned after four seasons to take a position on the staff at Otterbein University.

A 1997 graduate of Peoria Notre Dame, Walden was a two-year starter at Knox and the 2001 team MVP… Read more…

Bruce Polay, professor of music at Knox College and artistic director/conductor of the Knox-Galesburg Symphony, was interviewed August 23 on WQPT, the PBS television station in the Illinois/Iowa Quad Cities. Polay discussed the symphony’s 2012-2013 concert season, the Bruce and Old Friends recital series, the symphony’s International Call for Scores, and the symphony’s showcasing of works by new composers… Read more…

Knox faculty welcomed by local Chamber

There were new beginnings enjoyed as the Galesburg Area Chamber of Commerce had its annual New Teacher Luncheon in downtown Galesburg at The Kensington Ballroom on Monday, an event hosted to celebrate the induction of new teachers…

Sarah Scullin and Jason Nethercut, both of whom will begin teaching Classics (Latin & Greek) at Knox College this fall, came from as far as Philadelphia, Pa. Both Nethercut and Scullin attended the University of Pennsylvania… “We’re getting used to people we don’t know smiling at us in the street,” Scullin joked of Galesburg. The two are expecting, and look forward to raising their child in a small community… Read more…

Hendrick named preseason All-American

A Knox College defensive standout has been named to a third preseason All-American football team. USA Football News selected Mike Hendrick (Smithton) , a senior linebacker, as a member of its 2012 USA College Football Division III Preseason All-American First Team defense.
