Knox College journalism students are planning to again poll Galesburg residents about their candidate choice for president in the upcoming Nov. 6 election featuring Barack Obama and Mitt Romney… Professor of Journalism Sue Deans is leading the class in putting together the poll and coordinating the calling and analyzing the results. The results of the poll will be published in the Oct. 28 edition of The Register-Mail along with student stories interpreting the data… Read more…

University of Chicago Charter School English teacher Quinetta Bellows-Miller spent countless hours working overtime to prepare her classroom for the new school year. Bellows-Miller earned her bachelor’s degree in education from Knox College. She went on to receive her master’s degree in education from the University of Illinois at Chicago and graduated with a 3.7 GPA, thanks in part to the Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program. Joining the McNair Program was “probably the best decision I ever made [in] undergrad,” said Bellows-Miller, the first in her family to earn a post-secondary degree.
The Department of Education’s decision to cut $10 million worth of funding from the program would mean nearly one-third of McNair cohorts across the program’s 194 campuses nationwide will shut down this fall. Congress will vote on whether or not to uphold or overrule the department’s proposed cuts on September 30. And hundreds of students will be immediately affected should the cuts take place… Read more…

Knox College swept MacMurray College in women’s and men’s soccer on Wednesday [Sept. 19] and claimed the new traveling Ferris Trophy in the process. The Prairie Fire women’s team defeated the Highlanders 2-0. The victory also gave the Prairie Fire possession of the Ferris Trophy. The Knox men’s team completed the sweep with a 7-1 win… Both Galesburg and Jacksonville have connections to the Ferris Wheel and its inventor, George Ferris… Read more…

There’s a bit of madness at Blick Art Materials twice a year. The fall version of Blick Madness is 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Thursday at [the Blick retail outlet in Galesburg] and all Blick Art Materials stores. Everything from discounts to a band, to a college art contest will be featured at the local store… The Moon Dog Trio will provide live music from 6-8 p.m. during the college painting competition… Monmouth College, Knox College, Carl Sandburg College, Bradley University and Western Illinois University have committed to take part in the painting competition… Carl Sandburg College won the first two events, followed by Southeast Community College of Burlington, Iowa, and Monmouth… Read more…
