[Knox College men’s basketball coach] Kevin Walden has seen a lot of great basketball in his time… “I started my junior and senior year in high school,” said Walden, a post player who graduated from Peoria Notre Dame High School in 1997 and went on to play for Knox College. “Those were some pretty great days for hoops in the city… It was a Who’s Who down there back then.”… Walden’s got tales from the days when hoops reigned state king in Peoria. “When I was a sophomore, Frank Williams was a freshman playing up with the Manual sophomores,” Walden recalled. “He was their tallest player, so I had to guard him.”…

The Midstate 6 Conference back in Walden’s era featured the likes of Mike Robinson, A.J. Guyton, Frankie King, Sergio [McClain], and Marcus [Griffin]. “Those guys were great players because they were great people. It was how they handled themselves that made them really impressive.”… Read more…

Knox College, the Galesburg School District, and the First Presbyterian Church have teamed up to be a part of “Blessings in a Backpack”… a national organization that [helps provide] students the food they need during the day [even when school is not in session.]

Retired District-205 Assistant Superintendent Joel Estes is now in the Education Studies Department at Knox College, and says while schools give students meals during the day, many kids don’t have much more than that… “The idea is we’re gonna provide food for kids over the weekend… In total, Estes says the group hopes to help feed 150 students in town, but takes roughly 80 dollars only to feed one kid for a year, so donations are currently being accepted. Filed under: Students, Alumni, Academics, Sciences, Faculty, Research — Peter @ 10:29 am

From: KDVR Fox 31 News (Denver, CO)

Psychology research at Knox College that indicated girls as young as six were interested in looking ’sexy,’ prompted Kim Posey of Fox 31 Denver to “put together a similar survey of girls” in the Denver area KDVR reports. “The results were equally as surprising… Researchers at Knox College in Illinois showed 60 girls ages six to nine two paper dolls. One was dressed in a very revealing outfit, and one was dressed in a more covered outfit. Sixty-eight percent of the girls said they wanted to look like the ’sexy’ doll, and 72 percent thought the ’sexy’ doll would be more popular… Kim surveyed 15 girls in second and third grade [in a Denver after school program]… 80 percent picked the ’sexy’ girl as the popular girl…” Read more… and see Knox in the News for more coverage of the research by Knox graduate Christy Starr and her faculty advisor Gail Ferguson.

From: The Register Mail (Galesburg, IL)

Tom Wilson writes about the Knox-Monmouth football game 85 years ago, one year prior to the creation of the now-famous Bronze Turkey Trophy: On Thanksgiving Day 1927… it appeared that the game was doomed to possibly end in a scoreless tie until a very unexpected defensive play by Knox occurred when Monmouth was approaching scoring territory in the final stanza. Monmouth quarterback Walker attempted a lateral pass to his tight end Mohlenbrock near the Knox 25-yard line. Out of nowhere streaked Knox husky defensive end Will Massie who grabbed the pass with one hand and raced 75-yards down the field for the only score of the game… The famed Bronze Turkey [trophy] was not introduced until one year later… Read more…
