After graduating from Knox College in Galesburg, Ill., and teaching history for a year, Elizabeth Brook enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was commissioned a lieutenant (junior grade). She was posted in Washington, D.C., during World War II in a job that led to a lifelong career of travel as a secretary at U.S. embassies in eight countries.
