Annual prairie burns turns up the heat

The Peoria Journal Star reports on the annual prairie burn at Green Oaks biological field station.

Students from Knox College received a hands-on lesson in the effect of prairie fires Saturday at the college’s Green Oaks biological field station near Dahinda.

The annual prairie burn is part of an ongoing effort to recover the native prairie grasses that once dominated the landscape in this area.

Burns are conducted on a three-year cycle, and this year eight acres were burned over three different small prairies.
