Knox Bikers Traced Route of Settlers

Knox College graduates Phil Watkins and Mike Briggs, both living in Galesburg in 1975, decided to carry out a whim that would involve use of their 10-speed bicycles… Watkins had recently read through a diary of Mrs. Jerusha Farnham depicting the trip from New York in the early 1820s of Galesburg’s original settlers, the only known such diary kept by the future founders of Galesburg. Watkins convinced Briggs, who was news director at WGIL Radio, that they should cover the same route riding bicycles…

(After traveling by train from Galesburg to New York), they embarked on May 3… and arrived back in Galesburg after 14 days… Watkins (who worked in journalism and politics) passed away in August, at age 66.
