Tom Wilson: Galesburg Doctor Played Football At Knox

From the Register-Mail:

We recently found an “On The Rebound” column by former Register-Mail sports editor Joe Morrissey from 1968 that highlighted the death of Dr. Fred Ewing from Galesburg.

Fred Ewing captained the Knox College football team during 1902 that defeated the likes of Notre Dame, Northwestern and the University of Kansas. Ewing was considered a true student athlete while on the Knox campus, being elected president of the Inter-State Oratorical Society and the 1903 class president.

Following graduation from Knox, Ewing financed his way through medical school by coaching the Siwash football team. He also served as the first football coach at the University of Oklahoma.
