Illini defeat Knox on NYE
Area basketball fans were treated to a New Years Eve basketball spectacular in 1935 as the University of Illinois won a hard fought battle over Knox College at the Galesburg Armory. The Illini staged a furious “three point a minute†scoring demonstration during the final part of the first half to turn a close battle into a decided advantage. The flurry of 22 points in less than seven minutes was considered by many to be one of the greatest demonstrations seen on local courts.
Illinois was led by Harry Combes with 12 points and Knox received a stellar performance from Dean Trevor who scored 4 points and played an excellent defensive game. Who would have speculated that night that Combes would coach his alma-mater for 20 seasons and Trevor would return to Knox as coach and athletic director for 38 years.
