Adventure of ‘great’ proportions: Knox grad and sister circumnavigate the Great Loop

From the Register-Mail:

Knox College graduate Elizabeth McPhail and her older sister Katie have been boating their whole lives.

“We have always been on the water, we have always been boating,” Elizabeth said. “We’ve spent every one of our summers in Wisconsin — when we’re in Wisconsin, we’re on the water.”

The waters the sisters are used to have always been contained, like Lake Sammamish near their Issaquah, Wash., home or the spring-fed, chain of lakes near their summer house in Waupaca, Wis. But the day after Elizabeth’s Knox graduation in early June, the sisters embarked on a boating trip that took them through the unfamiliar waters of the Mississippi River and the Atlantic Ocean.

In 84 days, the McPhail girls completed the Great Loop, a 5,805-mile adventure around the eastern half of the United States. A story of their journey, which Katie wrote, was published in the November/December 2009 issue of Boating magazine, and another story of their voyage is coming out in Cottage Living’s April issue.
