The Illinois Council of Orchestras’ (ICO) 2013 Community Relations of the Year Award was presented to Pearl Strickland, Executive Director, Knox-Galesburg Symphony (KGS) by Dr. Bruce Polay, KGS artistic director/conductor on behalf of ICO Board President Allan Dennis at the KGS April 27 concert at the Orpheum Theatre. Additionally in recognition of Strickland’s ICO Award, Representative Don Moffitt presented her an Illinois State Senate Recognition Certificate on behalf of Senator LaHood and an Illinois House of Representatives Certificate from Representative Moffitt. Deputy Mayor Wayne Allen presented a City of Galesburg Proclamation on behalf of Mayor Sal Garza. On behalf of the Galesburg Symphony Society Board of Director, Polay ended the ceremony with a bouquet of flowers.
The specific criteria for which The Knox-Galesburg Symphony received the Community Relations of the Year was based on projects undertaken which benefited the community as a whole and projects which involved other community organizations.
It’s time for a change of pace. Spring is finally here, Mother’s Day is coming up, and everyone is feeling festive! The Knox-Galesburg Symphony, under the direction of artistic director and conductor Bruce Polay, is ready to help you mark the occasion with our annual “Celebrate Mom at the Pops” concert this coming Saturday, May 11, at the Orpheum Theatre.
This year’s pops concert is a special tribute to jazz legend Ray Charles and will feature David Hoffman on trumpet and Manuel Lopez III as vocalist and on keyboard. The program has been arranged by David Hoffman, who toured with the Ray Charles band for thirteen years, and will include music from every period of Ray Charles’ career including “Let the Good Times Roll,” “Georgia on My Mind,” “Crying Time,” “Oh What A Beautiful Morning,” What I’d Say,” and many other Charles tunes.
Joining the KGS will be The Cherry Street Combo with Nate Beck on trumpet, Kyle Kunkler on piano, Jake Hawrylak on bass, and Joshua Calef on drums, as well as special guests Todd Kelly, trumpet, and saxophonists Ivan Keta, alto, Larry Harms, tenor and Nate Moore, baritone.
