Robin Ragan (Spanish) presented at the Congreso Internacional de Literatura Hispánica in Mérida, Mexico on March 10. Her presentation was entitled “Censorship in Music Lyrics and Concerts in Post-transition Spain”

Though many categorize the early 80s as a time of great freedoms and experimentation, the censoring of political music tells another story. While sexual freedoms and attitudes about drug use were indeed indicative of a cultural pendulum shift, the censoring of music lyrics and concerts, designed to criticize the democratically-elected PSOE party policies on NATO, show us that little had changed in this arena.
