- Sage eReference is a collection of 62 reference texts in the social sciences published between 2003 and 2007. The Library is pleased to announce the purchase of Historical Statistics of the United States Millennial Edition Online from Cambridge University Press. Considered the definitive source of statistics for U.S. history, this online version of the 5-volume print edition was released in 2006. The work is divided into 5 subject areas: population; work & welfare; economic structure & performance; economic sectors; and governance & international relations. Coverage ranges from 1800 to 2000, however some areas go back to 1610 or forward to 2002.
This online reference work allows for enhanced data manipulation:
- Downloadable and customizable data to suit individual areas of interest
- Download tables in Excel or CSV; can also download entire groups of tables as a zip file
- Create custom tables; merge columns from multiple tables to create custom tables, which can also be downloaded, printed, or graphed
A site tour is available to learn more about the powerful features of Historical Statistics of the United States. This purchase was made possible with a generous subsidy from CARLI, the Consortium of Academic and Research Libraries in Illinois.
The Knox College Library now subscribes to online full text content for three important magazines of political thought and opinion:
All three of these titles are available on the EbscoHost database service.
The Library has a trial of RefWorks until June 15th. RefWorks, a web-based product, is used to manage bibliographic references, store information about those reference, and to format notes and bibliographies. RefWorks also includes the RefShare component, which allows you to share bibliographies on the web.
For this trial period, access RefWorks (from on-campus only) at http://www.refworks.com/refworks. The first time you access RefWorks you need to create an account and register. Click on the link to “Sign up for an individual account” and register your account.
The RefWorks Quick Start Guide outlines what a new user needs to know to start using RefWorks. In addition, there is a RefWorks tutorial available within the program itself. To access this feature just click on the Tutorial link located at the top of each page, or go directly to http://www.refworks.com/tutorial.
EBSCO is providing free access to Greenfile, which offers citations/abstracts and some full text coverage of journal articles for all aspects of human impact to the environment. Its collection of scholarly, government and general-interest titles includes content on global warming, green building, pollution, sustainable agriculture, renewable energy, recycling, and more.
The Library has the following databases available for trial.
- International Index to the Performing Arts (IIPA): Has over 400,000 indexed articles, plus detailed abstracts and full text from 1864 to the present, covering film, theater, and dance. This trial lasts until May 5th.
As of Feb 4th, connections made to the Knox Library Catalog will be via secured (https) connections. This change to switch all catalog sessions to secured (https) connections is a result of our consortium’s (CARLI’s) continuing effort to protect patrons’ confidentiality so that personal data (names and borrower IDs), which are used to place requests or renew items, are protected.
Depending on the browsers you use, and your browsers’ preference settings, you may notice several new behaviors in the Library Catalog. If you are viewing a catalog record that has enhanced content such as a cover image, you may now encounter a browser alert that says, “This page contains both secure and nonsecure items. Do you want to display the nonsecure items?” In Internet Explorer the security setting “Prompt,” for “Display mixed content,” will generate this message. Other possible settings are “Disable,” which will prevent the enhanced record content from displaying, or “Enable,” which will allow the enhanced content to display without the warning message.
The Library recently acquired more online journal content by licensing the Sage Premier collection of online journals. The Sage Premier collection complements our Sage Deep Backfile collection by providing coverage for journals from 1999 to the present. Knox’s Sage collection now contains 298 scholarly journals in the social sciences with coverage from the first issue of each journal up through the present issue. Our acquisition of both of these collections is partially subsidized by CARLI, the Consortium of Academic and Research Libraries in Illinois. Access the Sage Collection from the library’s Databases A-Z web page.
