The Knox College Library announces a new digital collection of images and documents: Railroads in the Midwest: Early Documents and Images. This collection showcases documents, letters, photographs, and ephemera from Knox College’s Special Collections and Archives related to the history of railroads in the Midwest from the 19th century through the early 20th century up until the introduction of diesel engine technology.

Documents and maps in this collection covering the early history of railroads in the Midwest, and in Illinois in particular, provide evidence that railroads played the major role in the economic and demographic development pageant of westward expansion during the 19th century. Images in this collection document the grandeur of steam locomotive technology, and also give us a glimpse of life connected to the railroad. Allen A. Green (Knox College class of 1903) took many of the photographs in this collection.
