Trial Databases for Winter/Spring 2009

The Library has ongoing trials for the following databases.

  • Safari Tech Books Online
    Safari Tech Books Online, a joint venture of O’Reilly Media and The Pearson Technology Group, provides full text of thousands of books in computer science, networking and technology fields: certification, enterprise computing, Java, Linus/Unix, Web development, Windows, XML, and more. Books in this collection are fully searchable. This trial expires June 26, 2009.
  • Environmental Impact
    This multi-faceted database is “… a single comprehensive bibliographic information resource on climate change and other influences of humans on the biosphere. It also covers other aspects of man’s damage to the environment such as pollution, deforestation, desertification and habitat loss.” The database includes full text of 57 ebooks, CAB Reviews articles, links to climate change reports, and indexing for over 5000 journals. Note: To search the entire database, click on Abstracts Database from the top menu. This trial runs through June 15, 2009.
  • Oxford Language Dictionaries Online
    Oxford Language Dictionaries Online features essential language resources - fully searchable, completely comprehensive bilingual dictionaries, and unique study materials that provide extra help with learning and using an expanding range of languages.  Offering over 4 million words, phrases and translations in French, German, Spanish, Italian, Russian, and Chinese, the site also features native speaker audio pronunciation - allowing you to hear how words actually sound. This trial expires May 3, 2009.
  • SocINDEX with Full Text
    SocINDEX with Full Text is the world’s most comprehensive and highest quality sociology research database. The database features more than 1,986,000 records with full text for 708 journals dating back to 1908. This database also includes full text for more than 780 books and monographs, and full text for 9,333 conference papers. This trial ends June 18, 2009.
  • Political Science Complete
    Provides indexing and abstracts for more than 1,900 titles and full text for more than 500 publications, including top-ranked scholarly journals, recent reference works, and professional conference papers. Its coverage consists of a wide range of topics such as law and legislation, comparative politics, political theory, international relations, humanitarian issues and non-governmental organizations. PSC’s focus is worldwide, reflecting the globalization of contemporary political discourse. This trial ends June 18, 2009.
  • Grove Music Online
    Available through the Oxford Music Online gateway, Grove Music Online includes the full text of The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, second edition; The New Grove Dictionary of Opera; and The New Grove Dictionary of Jazz, second edition.  The database also includes access to the full text of the Oxford Companion to Music, The Encyclopedia of Popular Music and the Oxford Dictionary of Music. This trial ends April 17, 2009.
  • Access World News Research Collection
    Research unique current and archived news content for information on topics, events, issues, people, businesses, and more through this in-depth resource. Easy online access to local, in-state, national and international news sources, including newspapers, broadcast transcripts, newswires, news blogs, news web-only content and video. Alerts and “my personal” functionality helps students and faculty track and manage their research projects. This trial goes through June 2009.
  • The American West
    This online resource is collection of primary sources from the Everett D. Graff Collection at the Newberry Library, Chicago. The collection contains original manuscripts, ephemeral material (trade cards, wanted posters, photos, claim certificates, news-sheets etc), maps, and rare printed works. (Documents in pdf are not available for downloading for this trial.) This trial lasts has ended.
